WHAT FOODS ARE BENEFICIAL FOR MY HEALTH?

Low-fat, low-carb, fat free, sugar free, gluten free, paleo, no sugar added. The list of “healthy” foods goes on and on, and is confusing! But many foods that fall in these categories actually aren’t healthy. That’s right. Gluten free cookies aren’t any healthier than regular cookies. All of these categories have their place, but not necessarily for you.

So what foods are actually beneficial for your health? Ultimately it will always come down to two factors – natural and nutritional. Foods that are grown from a plant or have a mother, and foods that contain nutritional value will nearly always be beneficial for your health. (I say “nearly” because people have various food allergies and eating something they’re allergic to will not be beneficial for their health, even if it contains nutritional value!)

In addition to fruits and vegetables, below are 5 foods that are incredibly beneficial for your health, but often overlooked:

Olive oil

This healthy fat reduces the risk of cancer, type 2 diabetes, strokes, osteoporosis, depression, skin cancer and Alzheimer’s Disease. Healthy fats are essential to give your body energy and support cell growth.

Almonds

Almonds lower blood sugar levels, reduce blood pressure and cholesterol. One serving contains 6 grams of protein and 14 grams of healthy fats, which helps keep your stomach satisfied.

Flax seeds

Flax seeds are low in carbs and heal your intestinal tract (great for people with autoimmune diseases!) In addition to being great for your digestive health, they help you lose weight, lower cholesterol and help reduce the risk of cancer (breast, prostate, ovarian and colon cancers, specifically).

Hemp seeds

This healthy fat promotes heart health and balances hormones. Hemp seeds also heal your digestive system, strengthen your hair, skin and nails, and reduce the symptoms of arthritis and joint pain.

Probiotics

These are fantastic for healing your digestive tract. This healthy bacteria helps complete the digestive process and strengthens your immune system (again, great for those with autoimmune diseases). Probiotics are essential to maintain a healthy gut (digestive organs). Many people have “leaky gut syndrome” which leads to other health problems. Taking probiotics daily can heal your body and prevent future health issues.
